Steampunk Star Wars (2008)

In 2008, inspired by a CG Society hardcore modelling challenge I decided to re-imagine the classic scene where Luke Skywalker meets Master Yoda in Dagobah as a steampunk moment.
That would be called “When Ace Skywalker met old Warlord Yoda
The first part of the job was to handdraw and digitally paint the concepts of the main objects involved in the scene and then build the diorama that would work as reference for the overall scene. After that I started the individual models.

R2-D2

I’ve dropped the classic blue look for a more metallic skin one, leaving some internals appearing and adding a big steam chimmey on the back.

X-Wing

This one turned out as the offspring of a World War I airplane with a train. Wings were covered with a thin metal surface similar to the one on the Fokker DR.1 flew by the red baron and the metal sled also remember the track cleaners on old trains.
The engines received wooden propellers instead of jets that would look misplaced.
As the thin wings don’t seem to be able to hold the weight of old canons, two of them were placed beside the cockpit. Those were also used to break the simmetry of the model.

The Lightsaber

Lightsabers are usually all metallic pieces, but a post industrial looking one would not fit the overall look, so this one received things that would make it look as a believable piece of early-eletrical days like coils and a ignitor. It also received a wooden handle as plastic was not invented and rubber were not so common in that period.

Ace Skywalker

The Space Ace variant of Luke Skywalker is a more seasoned character, with a more tired look and more military experience.
He uses a World War I pilot gear, plus some mechanical adds to reflect some of the original X-wing fighter pilot look.
Sadly this is were the project found his hiatus. Due to work and personal issues I was never able to sculpt and finish texturing this model.

Warlord Yoda

The great Warlord of the old Wars wears a Samurai armour to reflect his profound sense of honor and duty. His face and hair reflect that he is centuries old, but his expression is still serious and powerful. The base mesh for Yoda was started, but the model never reached the sculpting step.

I still plan to comeback and finish this model in the future. If so, I’ll post updates on the page.
